The soft morning light slipped through the curtains, brushing gently across Aylin's face. Still half-asleep, she turned on her side-when suddenly, she felt something soft and silky against her skin, like a little ball of fur.
A faint meow broke the silence.
Her eyes flew open, and instantly her lips curved into a smile.
"Oh God, you're here!" she exclaimed.
Her little cat puffy had jumped onto the bed, curling up beside her. Aylin scooped her up into her arms, hugging her tightly as warmth spread through her chest.
"You know how much I missed you? It's only been a day, but without you everything feels so empty. Do you even know how much I love you?"
The cat meowed again, as if replying to her words.
Aylin laughed softly. "Yes, yes, I know-you want food. The moment you eat, you'll run off exploring again, won't you? Fine, let me get it for you."
She slipped out of bed, still holding the tiny creature close, and walked toward the kitchen. The sadness that usually clouded her mornings had lifted for once-the return of her cat had filled her day with a gentle kind of joy.
As she placed the bowl of food on the floor, Aylin's mind wandered back to yesterday.
Flashbacks:
She remembered the knock on the door-the cheerful little girl from next door, cradling her own cat in her arms. The two cats had become inseparable over time, often walking side by side through the garden as if they were the best of friends.
But yesterday had been different.
The neighbor's cat had fallen ill, refusing to eat, lying weak and restless. The girl had pleaded softly, "Can I borrow your cat for just one day? Maybe it will make mine feel better."
At first, Aylin's heart had resisted. Every part of her wanted to say no. The thought of being apart from her cat even for a night made her chest tighten. This wasn't just a pet-it was her treasure, her comfort, her family.
Because this cat... was her father's last gift to her.
Aylin remembered the day vividly. Her father had brought home the tiny kitten, placing it gently into her small hands. "Take care of her," he had said with a smile, "and she will take care of you." Back then, her mother had laughed softly, watching the way Aylin's eyes lit up. That memory was etched deep in her heart, one of the last precious ones before the accident took them away.
So yesterday, when her neighbor asked, she had shaken her head. "I... I can't. She's all I have left."
But the little girl's eyes had welled up, her voice trembling as she whispered, "Please, just for one day..."
Aylin had no choice. With a heavy heart, she had finally agreed, though her chest felt hollow the moment her puffy left her arms.
Flashbacks end here:
And now, as the little creature rubbed against her leg, safe and healthy again, Aylin bent down and hugged her tightly.
"You're not just my puffy," she whispered, her voice breaking softly. "You're my family."
After feeding her cat, Aylin began getting ready for the day. She slipped into a simple black frock that complimented her figure without being too loud, exactly the way she liked it. Standing before the mirror, she applied only a touch of makeup-just enough to brighten her face, for heavy makeup had never been her preference. Her long dark hair was pulled neatly into a high ponytail, giving her a fresh, graceful look.
When she came downstairs, she found her aunt busy arranging the breakfast table.
"Uncle isn't here?" Aylin asked softly.
Her aunt smiled. "He left early for work."
"Oh, alright," Aylin nodded.
Her aunt's eyes lingered on her for a moment before she said warmly, "You look very pretty today."
Aylin lowered her gaze with a shy smile. Compliments always made her a little uneasy, but somewhere deep inside, it touched her heart.
Just as she was about to leave, her eyes fell on her cat. The little creature was curled up quietly in a corner, looking weaker than before. Concern immediately filled her expression.
"What happened to her? She doesn't look well..."
Her aunt shook her head. "I don't know, Aylin. In the morning she seemed fine, but now I can't tell what's wrong."
Aylin frowned slightly. "Strange... I fed her myself earlier. She was perfectly alright then. Maybe she's just tired. I'll check on her again when I come back."
Her aunt nodded gently, and after a few more words, Aylin picked up her bag. One last look at her beloved cat, and she whispered under her breath, "Be okay, please."
The university grounds buzzed with energy as students rushed through the corridors. Aylin had just entered when a familiar voice called out.
"Aylin!"
She turned to see Ananya walking toward her. Dressed in a soft lavender outfit, Ananya looked radiant, her hair falling gracefully over her shoulders.
"You look so pretty today," Aylin said with a smile, her tone filled with genuine warmth.
Ananya grinned, giving her a quick hug. "And you look even prettier! That black dress suits you perfectly."
The two girls laughed softly, their easy bond bringing a brightness to the crowded hallway.
"Come on," Ananya said, tugging at her hand. "The event is about to start. We should hurry before the seats fill up."
Ananya hesitated. "Let's sit in the back. It'll be quieter there."
But Aylin shook her head playfully. "No way! We're sitting in the front row. That way we won't miss anything."
With a resigned smile, Ananya agreed, and together they made their way to the auditorium.
Inside, the hall looked grander than usual. Lights shimmered across the stage, decorations hung from every corner, and the entire place buzzed with excitement. Students filled the rows, chatting and laughing as they waited for the performances to begin.
The program opened with music, dance, and short dramas-each student displaying their talent with pride. Applause echoed after every performance, the hall alive with energy.
Halfway through, an announcement was made.
"Our honorable guest will be joining us shortly. They were scheduled to arrive at 11, but due to some delays, they'll be here in about half an hour."
Aylin rolled her eyes and leaned closer to Ananya. "People like this never value time. It looks so unprofessional."
Ananya smirked. "Oh really? You're lecturing about punctuality now?"
Aylin laughed, shaking her head. "I ...I know, I'm not exactly punctual either. But still-someone like this should be."
The two of them dissolved into giggles, their soft laughter blending with the background chatter of the crowd.
The next half hour passed in a blur of more performances-music, dance, short acts-each one drawing cheers from the audience. The auditorium was alive with energy, but Aylin's attention wandered, her thoughts straying back to her little cat at home.
Just then, her phone buzzed in her bag.
"Oh ... it's so noisy here," she muttered, glancing at the flashing screen. Turning to Ananya, she said, "I'll be right back, I need to take this call."
Slipping out of the crowded hall, she stepped into the corridor. The contrast was stark-where inside there was laughter, music, and applause, outside lay silence. Empty hallways stretched before her, every classroom locked, every corridor deserted. Her heels echoed softly against the marble as she lifted her phone to her ear.
"Hello?" she answered, her voice low.
On the other side, her aunt spoke, "Hello."
"Yes, Aunty? Is everything alright?"
"Yes, yes, everything's fine," came the calm reply.
Her heart eased a little. "And yeah puffy? Is she alright now
There was a pause. Then her aunt sighed. "i I think Aylin... I don't think puffy is doing well she is hav....
Suddenly she collided hard into someone.
Her phone slipped from her hand, clattering onto the floor. "Oh no!" she gasped, crouching quickly to grab it. Her fingers trembled as she picked it up.
The screen was black.
A cold wave of panic washed over her-not just for the broken phone, but for the unsettling silence that now surrounded her.
And then... she slowly lifted her gaze to the figure she had bumped into.
Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in black that seemed to deepen the emptiness of the corridor. His presence was sharp, commanding, almost suffocating-as though the very air shifted when he stood still.
Aylin's phone slipped from her hand, crashing against the marble floor. The screen flickered once before going black. Her heart sank - puffy. She bent quickly to pick it up, when a figure suddenly blocked her path.
She looked up.
Icy grey eyes, expressionless and unyielding, met hers. Zavian Khan. Tall, broad, and impossibly composed. The coldness radiating from him made her chest tighten.
"What the hell, Look at what you've done!" she snapped, panic and frustration and anger mixed in her voice.
His voice was low, sharp, and completely indifferent.
"Watch where you're going. Don't blame me for your clumsiness."
She flared, "Can't you even pay attention? Are you blind or something?"
A flicker of annoyance crossed his face.
Her pulse quickened, worry for puffy making her words sharper.
"You weren't even looking!"
He didn't flinch. His jaw tightened, voice colder than ice.
"I don't owe you an explanation. Move carefully next time, or stay out of my way."
Aylin's frustration and panic surged. Without another word, she shoved past him, desperate to get away and call her aunt.
Zavian remained motionless, his expression unreadable, his gaze cutting and detached. His words, when they came, were blunt, like a blade:
"Pathetic."
Aylin returned to the auditorium, the chaos of the event fading behind her as she spotted Ananya waiting. She hurried over.
"Give me your phone, mine's broken," Aylin said, holding out her hand.
Ananya blinked in surprise. "What happened?"
"I bumped into someone... it broke. I argued with him. I'll tell you later. I just need to know how Puffy is-I was in the middle of a conversation about her," Aylin said, her voice edged with worry.
Ananya frowned but handed it over. "Here, take it."
Clutching the borrowed phone, Aylin slipped out of the hall again, looking for a quieter spot to call her aunt.
"Hello," she began as soon as her aunt picked up.
"Hello, Aylin. Everything okay?" her aunt asked calmly.
Aylin's worry eased slightly. "Puffy? Is she alright?"
Her aunt paused for a moment. "She vomited earlier, but she's a little better now. Don't worry."
Aylin nodded, relief washing over her. "I'm coming. It'll take me just half an hour."
"Okay," her aunt replied. "No need to stress."
After ending the call, Aylin returned to the auditorium and sat back down beside Ananya.
Ananya leaned closer and whispered, "So... how's Puffy?"
"She's okay now," Aylin replied softly, a hint of relief in her voice.
The buzz of excitement filled the hall as the principal stepped onto the stage, adjusting the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the principal began, voice clear and welcoming, "we are honored today to have a very special guest with us."
Applause erupted as everyone turned toward the stage.
But aylin she froze.. him?
The principal continued, "We are proud to welcome the CEO of Khan Enterprises, a leader whose vision and achievements inspire us all."
The applause rang through the auditorium as the guest stepped onto the stage. Every eye turned, curious and expectant.
Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in a sharp black suit that seemed to absorb the light around him. Zavian Khan moved with a calm, deliberate precision, each step commanding attention without a word.
The room felt smaller somehow, the chatter dimming as his presence filled the space. His posture was perfect, his expression unreadable - cold, controlled, and utterly composed. There was no warmth in his eyes, only sharp intelligence and authority.
The principal gestured toward him with respect. "Mr. Khan, it's an honor to have you here."
Zavian's lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile, almost imperceptible, before settling back into neutrality. He acknowledged the applause with a nod, but it wasn't for show - it was deliberate, measured, and entirely controlled.
Aylin's eyes fell on him, and her stomach twisted with panic. The memory of their earlier encounter-her harsh words, her anger-flooded back. She hadn't expected to see him again so soon, and certainly not as the special guest on stage.
She leaned toward Ananya, whispering urgently, "That's him... the one I argued with earlier."
Ananya's eyes widened. "What did you say to him?"
Aylin rolled her eyes, flustered. "It was insane... she explained everything that happen earlier
Ananya laughed softly. "Well, can't do anything now. It's done."
After stepping onto the stage, Zavian opened the floor for questions. Hands shot up across the auditorium, students eager to speak, and he addressed each one with calm precision.
"How do you handle challenges in your company?" one student asked.
Zavian's voice was clear, steady, and authoritative. "Every challenge is an opportunity. Focus, discipline, and smart decisions are key. We don't waste time complaining; we act."
Another student raised a hand, curiosity bright in their eyes. "What do you look for in interns?"
He glanced across the crowd, his expression unreadable but commanding attention. "Fresh ideas, willingness to learn, and the courage to take responsibility. Talent is nothing without dedication."
Question after question came, and each answer was measured, confident, and graceful. Even in his cold, detached manner, there was a precision in the way he spoke that drew respect from everyone listening.
Zavian's voice cut through the auditorium, sharp and commanding, capturing everyone's attention.
" I'm offering an opportunity for you students," he began, his tone precise and firm. "Four to five of you will be selected for an internship at my company. If you're interested, send your eCVs to the company email I've provided."
He scanned the room, his grey eyes cold and unwavering, making every student sit up straighter. "This is a chance to work with real projects, learn, and contribute. Only serious applicants will be considered, so make sure your CVs are complete and professional."
A hushed excitement spread through the hall as students whispered to each other, their pens and phones ready to take notes.
With a brief, measured nod, Zavian stepped back from the microphone, signaling the end of the announcement. The room buzzed with energy, the weight of the opportunity sinking in for everyone present.
Aylin sat frozen for a moment, heart racing. The same man she had clashed with earlier was now offering a real chance at an internship - the contrast between his cold arrogance and this professional authority left her simultaneously nervous and in awe.
After Zavian stepped off the stage, Ananya leaned toward Aylin, a teasing smile on her face. "You're going to send your CV, right?"
Aylin shook her head, biting her lip. "No... I won't. My first impression with him wasn't exactly good. I don't think he'll even consider me."
Ananya raised an eyebrow. "I don't think so. If you look at it professionally, he will. Besides, you're one of the best students in the university. You had a 3.9 GPA last semester, and you're good at everything. Sure, you're a little clumsy sometimes, but when it comes to work and studies, you're excellent."
Aylin hesitated, then muttered, "Well... fine. I'll think about it."
Ananya nudged her playfully. "Think? No, just send it. Don't overthink. Just send it."
Later, Aylin returned home, her mind still half on the day's events. She rushed to check on puffy first.
"puffy... you're okay now?" she asked, relief washing over her. The cat meowed softly, brushing against her hand.
"You really scared me today," Aylin whispered, stroking puffy gently. "I swear... because of you, I even got into a fight with that arrogant man."
The rest of the evening passed quietly. After talking to her aunt she went to her room and decided to take a nap
That night, after dinner, Aylin lay on her bed, her room dimly lit by the soft glow of her bedside lamp. She pulled the blanket over herself, but sleep refused to come. Instead, her thoughts replayed the scene in the auditorium.
"He was right there... in front of me. Yet he didn't even spare me a single glance. As if our argument earlier never even happened. Like I don't even exist to him. Ugh, why am I even wasting my thoughts on him?"
She turned on her side, hugging her pillow tightly. Her mind still wrestled with the decision. "Should I send my CV... or not?"
Minutes passed in silence before she exhaled sharply. "Fine. I'll send it. What's the worst that could happen? He probably doesn't even remember me. He meets so many people every single day. I'll just fade in the crowd for him. And anyway... when university ends, this internship might make things easier for me to land a job."
Gathering her courage, she sat up, pulled her laptop onto her lap, and typed quickly. Her eCV was ready. With one firm click, she sent it to the email address.
The screen went blank as she shut the laptop, but her heart still beat faster than usual. She leaned back against the headboard, whispering to herself, "That's it. Done."
Finally, as the clock ticked past midnight, Aylin lay down again, her mind heavy with questions, but her eyes growing drowsy. Slowly, she drifted into sleep - unaware that this small decision would soon pull her into a storm she had never imagined.
The rest of the evening passed quietly. After talking to her aunt and making sure everything was settled, Aylin finally went to bed, she kept replaying the day in her mind, convincing herself that Zavian hadn't even noticed her presence. To him, she was invisible - just another face in the crowd.
But what she didn't know was that his eyes had brushed past her in the auditorium. A fleeting glance, sharp and deliberate, that he masked behind his cold expression.
